Crate Seats!

This Summer, I was looking on Pinterest, and I saw some awesome crate seats for the classroom.  Here is the best tutorial, and the one I used to make mine.  It is from an awesome blog called What the Teacher Wants.

Here’s mine to match my theme and one I made for my school neighbor to match her theme.

I wish I would have thought to take step by step pictures, but I made them so quickly.  After all of your materials are prepares, it takes about ten minutes to make a seat cushion!  I made one during the previews for a movie I was getting ready to watch. Smile

Here’s what you need:

Filing Crate – it must have the “lip” on the inside that holds hanging files.  Right now at Wal Mart they are $3ish

Plywood – I used 3/8 – It runs between $5 and $6 for a sheet.  If you go to Lowe’s you have to buy the whole sheet, but they will cut it for you.  Lowe’s can only make straight cuts on wood, so take the crate with you.  They will happily (hopefully) cut it to fit down on the lip of the crate.

Egg Crate Mattress Pad – I got mine for $10 at Wal Mart

Spray Adhesive – $4 at WM

Single Cut fabric piece – $1ish at WM.  You can buy fabric by the yard, but you only need one half of a yard for each seat.  I like the single cut, because it fits perfectly and there’s no extra steps.

Staple Gun and Staples

Ribbon

Simple, Short Steps to making a Crate Seat:

1. Cut Egg crate to fit the plywood.

2. Spray wood with adhesive.

3. Place egg crate face down onto wood.

4. Cover wood and foam with fabric.

5. Pull tight and secure with staple gun.

6. Cut ribbon to fit across, and staple.

7. Voila!  Place finished seat on crate, and make sure you can pull it off the crate to use as storage.

I’ll answer any questions you may have, but I think if you have a tiny bit of patience, this will be a great project for your classroom – or your house!
